HOME RECYCLING TIPS:
The most common way to effective recycling is to start off by making sure your home is equipped for it. Placing a few different trash cans around for various recyclable materials is simple, and a good place to start.

1) Biodegradable - Can be composted and reused as fertilizer for flowerbeds & gardens.
Various Recycle Bins 2) Plastics - Can be locally dropped-off/picked-up for proper recycling.
3) Metals - Can be locally exchanged for cash or dropped/picked for proper recycling.
4) Non-recyclable - The most important trash bin. The object here is to limit this material being put out at the street for the garbage man and eventually a landfill.

Using your imagination and tracking your current "bad habits" you can find excellent ways to utilize recycling that usually leads to improved self-esteem, better health, and lifestyle. Once you recognize ways to recycle, stick to a regular procedure and develop the habit of doing it.
  • 1) Instead of buying a styrofoam cup of coffee every morning only to throw it into a landfill, purchase a special reusable coffee mug that you will use every day. Most gas stations and coffee stops offer a cheaper price for a "refill" using your own cup and you won't spend extra money for a throw-away cup.

  • 2) When you buy your writing paper, check to see that it is recycled paper. Use both sides and then RE-recycle it. Double recycling is powerful, one ton of recycled paper saves about 15 trees and over 5,000 gallons of water used to make paper.
  • 3) Check locally and make a list of locations that take recyclable trash like tires/rubber, old electronics, dead batteries, glass, plastics, papers. Buy rechargeable batteries and things that have been made of already recycled materials. Reuse plastic bottles where you can, and maybe instead of paying top dollar for bottled water, get a filter for your main faucet and bottle your own "cleaner" water.

  • 4) Find an area behind your home were you can start composting. Most anything in your biodegradables trash can be used in your compost pile and reused as fertilizers. Composting is very easy because you don't have to do much. Time is the key to composting, but NOT YOUR TIME!

  • 5) Reuse CDs and DVDs by purchasing "rewritable" types and reuse them for your projects. They can be over-written, erased, and reused unlimitedly.

Washing Hands Under A FaucetConservation Saves Earth
HOME WATER CONSERVATION TIPS:
You can help our environment easily by taking a few steps to improve your home water usage. These simple steps can save you a ton of money on your water bill and help water reserves and filtration of the water management in your community.

  • 1) Many shower heads are of poor design for conserving water. Consider changing your shower to using a low-flow shower head.

  • 2) Taking a bath requires about 60-80 gallons of water. Taking a few minutes to shower uses only about 20 gallons.

  • 3) Drip, Drip, Drip...A leaking faucet can waste hundreds and even thousands of gallons a year. Fixing a leak can save you bundles of money each month.

  • 4) When using a dish washer, make sure to fill it up each time. Partial loads use the same amount of water as a full load. You will use less loads and save.

    Rain Run-Off Entering The Sewers
  • 5) When washing your cloths, be sure to set the correct load size. Don't wash small or medium loads on full load settings.

  • 6) Adjust the float in your toilet tank to flush using less water. You don't need a full tank to flush as most are set to by default. This is a huge saver.

  • 7) Switch over from using chemical cleaning products to "all natural" cleaning products to avoid contamination and easier filtering at your local water treatment plant.

  • 8) When fertilizing your gardens or flowerbeds, wait until after expected rain passes. The rain will wash away alot of the fertilizer creating chemical runoffs into the sewer drains around the city.

HOME ENERGY CONSERVATION TIPS:
Conserving energy helps Earth in many ways. Not only can it reduce the amount of money you spend each month on electric and gas bills, but it will help energy companies in meeting the very high demand for energy. This also reduces the amount of needed mining, drilling, and expenses from such demand. A few simple steps can help you do your part.
Thermostat Set About 45 Degrees
  • 1) During the day or when your leaving on a trip, turn down your thermostat to 40-50 degrees(water freezes at 32 degrees). This alone will reduce your monthly bill.

  • 2) Change over to low watt bulbs or energy bulbs in your most common areas of your home. They should not even make 100 watt bulbs.

  • 3) Insulation keeps cold air in OR out...and keeps hot air in OR out. Make sure your home is insulated properly and you will save tons of money.

  • 4) Be aware of hot water use in your home. Using hot water makes your hot water tank run and it is a money pit. Use cold water whenever possible.

  • 5) Wash cloths on warm setting instead of hot setting when you can. Proper load setting helps, don't wash small loads on medium or maximum settings.

    Washer Dryer Set
  • 6) Consider some form of roof solar power if you own your home. Cost and installation expenses will be paid for over the long term turning into savings.

  • 7) If you live in a cold climate or have a cold season, windows either make or break your energy savings. If you can feel cold air when you put your hand near the window, consider upgrading windows to a double pane gas filled type. Alternatively you can use clear plastic as a barrier instead. This will keep precious heat from escaping through the glass.

  • 8) Use power strips throughout your home. You can turn off many things with one switch and save on power drains from unused electrical items. When going on a trip turn them all off. Another way is to "tag" or label your breakers in your electrical box and shut off breakers when a room is not in use or your leaving on a trip. Don't shut off heater breakers in cold climates as this will cause your pipes to freeze and burst below 32 degrees. Also sump pumps in basements as you don't want a flood either.
